How to Pack Light and Travel Smart: A Stress-Free Guide

Traveling to a new destination can be exciting, but the thought of packing can be overwhelming, especially when you are an overpacker like myself. I have learned some valuable tips that will help you travel smart and avoid dragging unnecessary luggage on your journey.

STEP 1. DO DESTINATION RESEARCH

Before you begin packing, do some research on your destination. This may be a given, but oftentimes I end up packing way too much ‘just in case’. For instance, if you are traveling to Rome in August, you will know it’s going to be warm, so you don’t need to bring five pairs of sweaters! Take note of the weather and keep in mind the activities you will be doing during your trip.

STEP 2. MAKE A PACKING CHECKLIST

As an overpacker, this step is extremely helpful for me. To ensure you don’t overpack, create a detailed checklist based on your travel needs. I have created a checklist for reference. This checklist can be tailored to suit your specific travel needs and preferences. Utilizing an organized checklist will not only save time, but also enhance your travel efficiency.

CARRY ON

    TRAVEL DOCUMENTS
  • Passport and/or Driver’s license/ID
  • Visa (if required) - For information on travel requirements check Travel.State.Gov and your planned destination’s embassy.
  • Boarding passes or tickets
  • Travel insurance
  • Itinerary and reservations (hotel, rental, tour guide tickets, etc.)
  • International Driver’s Permit (IDP) - For information on obtaining an IDP, check AAA International Driver's Permit. This site can provide answers to any questions you may have and assist you in applying for an IDP.

    ELECTRONICS & ENTERTAINMENT
  • Phone and charger - This Electronics Organizer ensures your cords and gadgets are safely stored for convenient access during your travels.
  • Power bank - Wait times in the airport can be brutal, always be prepared with a fully charged power bank.
  • Laptop/tablet and charger
  • Download books and magazines on your favorite reading app.
  • Download your favorite movies and/or TV Shows
  • Travel Phone Mount  - This is a life saver for your neck!
  • Notebook, pen, and highlighter

TIP: I prefer having a wide selection of entertainment options since I’m not sure what I’ll be in the mood for on the day of travel. I download a few series and a few movie options.

    MISCELLANEOUS
  • Carry-on travel bag
  • Keys (car and house)
  • Wallet
  • Medications - Ensure you have enough for the entirety of the trip, along with a prescription if needed.
  • Snacks
  • Collapsible/Reusable water bottle
  • Travel Pillow, scarf or blanket
  • Light jacket
  • Compression socks

CHECKED BAGGAGE

    CLOTHING
Choose versatile clothing that can be mixed and matched. For a 4-day trip, consider packing:
  • 4 Tops (shirts, blouses)
  • 2 Bottoms (pants, shorts, skirts)
  • 6 pairs of underwear
  • 6 pairs of socks
  • 4 Pairs of pajamas
  • 1 Sweater or light jacket for those chilly evenings.
  • 2-3 pairs of shoes: Tennis shoes for the daily activities that require a lot of walking, simple ballet slippers, and a nice pair of heels for a dressed up evening look.
  • Swimwear
  • Jewelry, belts, scarves, and hats.
TIP: Buy a travel jewelry organizer to prevent your necklaces from getting tangled.

    TOILETRIES
Opt for travel-sized toiletries and consider buying essentials at your destination to maximize space. Also, check with your hotel to see what toiletries they provide.
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Hairstyling tools (brush, flat iron, hair dryer, etc)
  • Shampoo and conditioner
  • Body wash
  • Deodorant
  • Razor and shaving cream
  • Moisturizer
  • Makeup
  • Contact lenses and solution
  • Sunscreen
TIP: Get a travel sized hair dryer and styling tools.

    MISCELLANEOUS
  • Sunglasses
  • Insect Repellent
  • First-aid kit
  • Reusable shopping bag
  • Umbrella and/or raincoat
  • Plastic bag for wet and dirty laundry
  • Travel adapter

STEP 3. CHOOSE THE RIGHT LUGGAGE

Opt for a lightweight and durable suitcase and/or backpack that fits airline regulations. You can also consider a carry-on bag to avoid baggage fees and reduce waiting times. Be sure to test any luggage before getting to the airport. Recently I had to upgrade my luggage because the wheels on my old suitcases were very stiff and made it incredibly difficult to lug my bags around the airport.

STEP 4. PACK STRATEGICALLY

Utilizing packing tools can be a game changer. Using packing cubes or compression bags to organize and compress your belongings. Pack a travel laundry bag, most packing cube sets include a laundry bag for wet and dirty clothing. Use Ziplock baggies to pack small items like accessories, chargers or toiletries.

Another space saving hack is to roll your clothing instead of folding them, this can also reduce wrinkles, it’s a win win! Using rubber bands on your rolled clothing can also prevent them from unfolding inside your suitcase. Utilize empty spaces by filling shoes with socks or small items.

Packing small for extended trips can be tricky, but when you plan it just right you can get by. Plan to utilize your hotel or local laundry services and bring travel-size detergent. Consider reusing clothing, choose quick drying and odor resistant fabrics.

STEP 5. TRAVEL SMART ON THE GO

While traveling it’s always important to keep in mind your safety and take extra precautions to prevent unforeseen accidents or potential risks. Here is a list of travel precautions you can take, while still enjoying your vacation:
  1. Keep a copy of important documents (passport, ID, travel insurance) and store them separately from the originals.
  2. Stay updated on travel advisories and potential health risks at your travel destination.
  3. Always keep your belongings secure and be mindful of pickpockets.
  4. Avoid risky areas, especially at night.
  5. Keep emergency numbers handy and know the location of the nearest embassy or consulate.
  6. Be cautious when using public Wi-Fi. If you have one, be sure to utilize a VPN.
  7. Follow safety instructions for any activities you have planned.
  8. Avoid displaying expensive items like jewelry or electronics in public.
  9. Inform a trusted friend or family member of your travel plans and itinerary.
  10. Be respectful of the local culture and customs to avoid unintentional offenses.

By taking the necessary precautions it will help ensure a safer and more enjoyable travel experience.

Remember, the key is to balance practicality with your travel needs and personal preferences. With these packing tips, you'll be ready to embark on your adventure stress-free and with only the essentials at hand.

Happy travels!
